Happy New Year, friends! We hope you've crammed lots of reading into the festive period. If not, no worries: there are lots of new stories and authors to get excited about this January. Here are some queer books we're most excited to see release this month!

Start the New Year with a sapphic mermaid romantasy on the 1st, as Adrian J. Smith and Neen Cohen conclude their trilogy with Battle Fluke.

A general. An outcast. A usurper. In a battle against humans, will three mermaids turn the tide of the war?

Hurt from failing to rescue Princess Soulara, Honour is taken in by Kyree, a deep sounding mer she’s been working with. Honour and Kyree find themselves captive to usurper, Hudson, and with no hopes of warning their people about Soulara’s doom. With the battle falling apart right before her eyes, Honour sees no escape from total annihilation.

Hudson craves power and control, something her mermaid tribe will never give her in their patriarchal beliefs. With a cohort of followers, Hudson fights her own people in a battle for power. Unexpectedly, her crew finds two washed up mers who claim their underwater haven is under attack. But will Hudson believe them? Can she risk failing her people if she doesn’t?

As a pacifist, Kyree is thrown into the chaos of a battle. With a mer bent on violence and one bent on rules, she’s caught between a rock and a hard place. Feeling attraction to both is the last thing she planned. And yet, working together might be the only solution when it comes to ending the war against humans.

Will they discover love during the darkest time the ocean has seen? And will Kyree finally admit her secret…that she has the missing hope they’re searching for?

Read the conclusion to the romantasy trilogy to find out how three rogue sapphic mermaids fight to save their world.

Kelly Farmer is back on the 7th, this time with a superhero romance. Secret Spark is the first book in the brand-new Vector City Supers series and features pansexual and lesbian main characters, with gay and non-binary rep too.

A hero? A villain? Maybe a little of both in this sapphic mistaken identity romance.

Sadie Eagan lives a fairly humdrum life in Vector City. Working at a coffeehouse is much safer than opening her own café. If only the local Superheroes and Villains would stop crashing through windows and driving up insurance rates. Then she meets her hot new neighbor: a fit woman with amber eyes, a disarming smile, and an air of mystery. Obviously, this means she’s one of the city’s Superheroes. And dating a literal hero would break the cycle of being with partners who take advantage of her.

Joan Malone does have a secret identity—only she’s Spark, a notorious Supervillain. Shooting fire has always made people afraid of her. She’s been trying to get out of villainy to open a food truck with her twin brother. When her cute and bubbly neighbor assumes Joan’s a Superhero, well, Joan doesn’t correct her. Sadie is the nice girl Joan has dreamt of being with. Though she hates hiding things from someone who understands wanting a better life.

Joan has to keep some rather inept Villains at bay while getting the Supers off her back. And oh yeah, while proving to Sadie not all bad guys are bad and not all heroes are heroic. Not that Sadie’s paying attention—it’s too exciting hanging out with a Superhero.

Only she’s fallen for the bad girl. Again.

A rift with the other Villains forces Joan to choose what she truly wants. Can she be the goodhearted person Sadie thinks she is?

On the 7th, grab debut romance Single Player by Tara Tai featuring a non-binary love interest.

Two video game creators go head-to-head in this delightful, queer enemies-to-lovers workplace romance debut.

Cat Li cares about two things: video games and swoony romances. The former means there hasn't been much of the latter in her (real) life, but when she lands her dream job writing the love storylines for Compass Hollow—the next big thing in games—she knows it’s all been worth it. Then she meets her boss: the infamous Andi Zhang, who’s not only an arrogant hater of happily-ever-afters determined to keep Cat from doing her job but also impossibly, annoyingly hot.

As Compass Hollow’s narrative director, Andi couldn’t care less about love—in-game or out. After getting doxxed by internet trolls three years ago, Andi’s been trying to prove to the gaming world that they’re a serious gamedev. Their plan includes writing the best game possible, with zero lovey-dovey stuff. That is, until the man funding the game’s development insists Andi add romance in order to make the story “more appealing to female gamers.”

Forced to give Cat a chance, Andi begrudgingly realizes there’s more to Cat than romantic idealism and, okay, a cute smile. But admitting that would mean giving up the single-player life that has kept their heart safe for years. And when Cat uncovers a behind-the-scenes plan to destroy Andi’s career, the two will have to put their differences aside and find a way to work together before it’s game over.

If an achillean hockey romance is more your style, grab Goaltender Interference by Ari Baran also on the 7th!

Newly retired hockey star Aiden Campbell should be a man with no regrets. Instead he is consumed by them. When he runs into his ex in New York City ten years after they broke up, he’ll have to confront his biggest regret of them all. Montreal hockey captain Matt Safaryan never expected to see his old flame again. Now that he has, he can’t forget what they had, no matter how badly Aiden hurt him. Which is why Matt finds himself on Aiden’s doorstep late at night with only a deep want driving him. One passionate night has them hooked all over again, but great sex was never the problem. Life after hockey has left Aiden adrift. Watching Matt push himself through chronic injuries isn’t helping, but this time around they’re determined to make this thing between them last. If only they can rebuild the trust they destroyed a decade ago. Giving their relationship a second chance might cut sharper than a blade, but it may also end up being their best play ever.

For One Night Only by Jessica James promises a queer rockstar MF romance on the 7th.

GLITTER BATS REUNION CONCERT—SOLD OUT!

When two former bandmates—and bedmates—are thrust back into each other's lives in a fake dating scheme for publicity, they'll be forced to face the music. After her recurring role in tabloid headlines, Valerie Quinn’s musical TV show is on the network chopping block. Desperate for good press, she hastily reassembles her wildly beloved pop punk band, Glitter Bats. A reunion concert could be the former lead vocalist’s ticket to a media makeover, especially if it renews public speculation around her iconic situationship with bassist Caleb Sloane.

The only problem? They haven’t spoken in six years. Caleb had the makings of a rock god, but fallout from the messy Glitter Bats breakup left him broke, anxious, and resentful of the industry. But when Valerie shows up at Caleb’s doorstep with that devastating smile and a plea for help, he reluctantly agrees to put on one last show. So what if the fandom assumes the two of them are back together too? They’ll play along. You know...for the press. Making music together not only revives the harmony between them, but also the discord that led to the band’s downfall. With their futures—and the Glitter Bats—in the balance, can they survive a romantic reprise?

Alejandro (Han for short) has never been in love. He purposefully keeps his heart at arm’s length from anyone who might want it, which he lets his family and friends think is due to commitment-phobia paired with a heavy dose of emotional constipation. On the other hand, Han’s roommate and best friend, Kenny, is stuck in a soul-sucking relationship with a woman who wants nothing more than for Kenny to ditch Han and marry her. Kenny can't stand being alone, and has always been afraid of being punished for making the wrong choice, so his girlfriend happily makes most of his decisions for him. But when she forces his hand and makes him choose between their relationship and his best friend, he finally knows without a doubt who the correct choice is.
